Our Beginning 

Opal Fields' roots trace back to 1984, when Opal Fields USA was established as the manufacturing and export arm of Opal Fields Australia—renowned opal cutters and producers. At that time, Opal Fields Australia served as a hub for both international wholesale buyers and curious travelers, offering a unique showroom experience that showcased opal jewelry, loose un-set gems, and the mesmerizing craft of opal cutting in action.

The company’s origins were shaped by Mr. Zoltan Berta, widely regarded as the modern father of the Queensland boulder black opal industry. From its base in Sydney, Opal Fields Australia earned a reputation for quality, authenticity, and passion—values that would later become the foundation for its expansion into the United States and the opening of a new chapter in Hawaii. Following its humble beginnings, Opal Fields entered a period of growth, exploration, and recognition. 

Our Journey 

Opal Fields first opened its doors on Oahu in 1990 and has sense occupied some of Honolulu’s most iconic locations—including Restaurant Row, Ward Warehouse, Ala Moana, and eventually the International Market Place.

In 1994, Opal Fields became a proud member of the American Gem Society (AGS), embracing a rigorous standard of excellence in gemology and ethics. Just a year later, founder Thomas Wheeler earned the distinguished title of Certified Gemologist Appraiser (CGA). His expertise and leadership extended beyond the showroom—serving two terms as president of the Hawaii Jewelers Association (HJA), where he helped shape the direction of Hawaii’s jewelry community.

The years that followed brought great recognition. In 2021, Tom was awarded the prestigious HJA Designer of the Year award. In 2022, Opal Fields celebrated again as designer Eiko Dunster received the same honor—making it two consecutive years of design excellence for the store, further establishing its legacy of innovative artistry.

Today 

Today, Opal Fields serves locals and visitors alike from our flagship store in the International Market Place in Waikiki, Honolulu. For over 40 years, we have been a trusted name in Hawaii's fine jewelry industry, specializing in precious gems, diamonds, and our signature opals, and offering one-of-a-kind designs that capture the beauty of Hawaii and beyond.
